Achoo!! Cough, cough. Sniffle, sniffle. Oh the joys of pollen season. What are the options for those poor souls afflicted with allergies? Continue to hibernate until pollen counts are down. Load up on synthetic ‘cures’ that will most probably have side effects worse than the symptoms of the allergy. Or try our 6 natural remedies that are economical, effective and easy on the body.
1. Eat Local Honey
We first suggested this in a post in 2008 and have had very positive feedback on how effective it is. Check out the article here for full details.
2. Fill up on Omega-3′s
Studies have shown that people with diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to suffer allergy symptoms. Omega-3s help fight inflammation and can be found in cold-water fish, walnuts and flaxseed oil.
Nope, not a good look, but it gets the job done.
3. Get Acquainted With A Netti-Pot
Doesn’t really sound that fun but a good old nasal irrigation with salt water does a wonderful job of clearing the sinuses.
4. Time for tea!!
A nice mug of hot tea, preferably peppermint relieves clogged-up noses and irritated mucous membranes (not sexy!!). Peppermint has anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a decongestant. I am a big advocate of the humble cup of tea click here to find out how it can help when a bad day strikes.
5. Nettles without the sting.
Many swear by nettle extract to ease their hay-fever. It does not cause drowsiness unlike man-made antihistamines but is just as effective. Make sure you take the freeze-dried extract of the leaves, recommended dosage is around 300 mg 2 or 3 times daily during allergy season.
6. Spice it up
To help keep airways clear when pollen counts are high, add a dash of horseradish, chili peppers or hot mustard to your food as a natural, temporary decongestant. It’s also a good idea to avoid foods that you’re slightly allergic to until the air clears. Fighting off allergies can leave the body hypersensitive to those foods, causing more severe reactions than usual.
