In December of last year, a the results of a cord blood study were released – and they were shocking. In a sample of the cord blood from ten newborns, up to 232 chemicals were found. Nine out of ten tested positive for BPA, “asynthetic estrogen that researchers have found to disrupt the endocrine system, disrupt normal reproductive system development and diminish test animals’ intellectual and behavioral capacity,” while ten out of ten tested positive for lead, mercury, and perfluorochemicals, active ingredients or breakdown products of Teflon, Scotchgard, fabric and carpet protectors, and food wrap coatings that are linked to cancer, birth defects, and more.

These are all chemicals that the babies were exposed to before birth – consider how many they will be exposed to for the rest of their lives. Chronic childhood illnesses like asthma and autism are linked to the 80,000 chemicals in cosmetics and household cleaners that have never been checked for safety. What are we supposed to do to keep children safe?
