March 2008 saw Earth Hour go global. 400 cities in 35 countries on all seven continents. Darkness fell on iconic landmarks around the world and even the google homepage. The most important statistic was that 36 million people made a stand against climate change, that is something that can’t be ignored.
In the following years the event went from strength to strength. 96 countries were involved in 2009, 126 in 2010 and 135 in 2011. Approximately 1.8 billion people made their stand last year, along with TV and radio stations, big corporations and celebrities.
The plan for 2012 is to surpass these staggering figures and to encourage people to go beyond the hour. To do this Earth Hour launched the “I Will If You Will” campaign using a dedicated YouTube platform. Where the Earth Hour digital community can inspire people to take sustainability actions. Miranda Kerr (top supermodel and Orlando Bloom’s wife) was the spokesperson and says she will give a free yoga class is 500 people upload an I Will If You Will challenge. This was my favourite today, click here to watch. Why not get involved and create your own or support someone else?
