Eco-Friendly Friday

October 1st’s Tip

Home Network: Most people know to turn off their computers when they are done using them. But how many of us remember to turn off our network equipment? Our routers and modems are humming away connected to the internet consuming energy the whole time. What we did before moving to VOiP for our home phone was to have the router and modem on a timer so they would power down when we would be off at work, school, or sound asleep in our beds. Not only does this help reduce power in your home but also at the internet service provider, as well, because they are not consuming energy to maintain the connection.

This will work well for those with normal phone service, but if you have VOiP (Vonage, Magic Jack, Ooma, and the like) for your home service, it is not necessarily a good idea, as you will not have phone service.
