Dish washing Detergent: Today’s Eco-Friendly Friday Tip is from Alicia at Green & Clean

There are many green cleaning products on the market, however I really like homemade remedies too. I came across this recipe for an automatic dish washing detergent and just had to share it, I thought it was great. The cost averages 50 loads for 50 cents!!! I don’t know if it is just me, but the cost of automatic dish washing detergent seems to be a bit pricey these days and they surely are not very eco-friendly.

So here is the recipe for Automatic Dish washing detergent-

1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
1/2 cup kosher salt
1/2 cup citric acid

Shake thoroughly or stir and store in tightly covered jar. Use one tablespoon per load. For best results add white vinegar to the rinse dispenser.

i have seen green works around online but never given them a go because they offer few products, and the ones that have are the standard make at home ones that require little power any way. i’m glad you’re happy with them. I find if you’re doing light cleaning that a microfibre cloth more then makes up for the lack of power from green cleaning products.

Thanks for the post. My wife and I were just talking about this last night. We’ll give your recipe a shot.

Lately we’re buying more of the greenworks product (this is not a plug, i have no affiliation with this company) which is supposed to be easy on the environment. So far so good in terms of cleaning power. I assume their claims of being completely natural and environmentally clean are legit. At least the ingredients seem to indicate it’s good.

That is FANTASTIC! I love home made cleaning stuff, it always works so much better. Not sure what Borax is though.. We always use vinegar and bicarb of soda, now that cleans almost anything!

silly me, i just realised it’s the same as soda crystals (something i use daily) so i have plenty of it, and in the uk it’s less then £1 it’s great value when you consider how much is needed.

Carol, I googled “washing soda” and it looks like Amazon.com and drugstore.com carry it, and for in-person stores, try Ace Hardware, Meijer, and possibly other hardware or grocery stores.

did you manage to find any? i have never thought to use washing soda. it’s a recipe i’d like to try as for my cleaning business one thing we are proud to boat is that we use a lot of home made cleaning products. it keeps our costs down and shows we know what we’re doing. the biggest problem is living in the UK is that it’s hard to find the ingredients, even white vinegar can be near impossible

Great eco-friendly tips in this series! A friend of mine hipped me to the homemade detergent years ago and I’ve been on board from them on. Not only is it eco-friendly it’s quite cost efficient. Thanks for an excellent post!

This is a wonderful post. Latly I have not really liked the resedue smell of the lemon in dish detergent. This is a wonderful solution, dont mind the pun!
