Eco-Friendly Friday

October 30th’s Tip

Last minute costumes: Halloween is tomorrow, and you don’t have a costume ready? Save money and sanity and reuse stuff in your home to create a costume.

Laundry
Take an old laundry basket and cut out the bottom so you put it over your head. Attach socks and/or random pieces of laundry to your shirt.

Washing Machine
I actually saw this one at a costume contest last weekend – it won a second place prize of $1000! Paint a large cardboard box white. Cut holes in the top and bottom so you can put it over your head. Attach empty laundry detergent bottles to the top. The winner with this costume went all out and had the dials on the upper portion, as well as a laundry basket on top of the machine, which came up almost above her head.

Static Cling
Attach random socks, small towels, fabric softener sheets, etc. to your clothes.

Artist
Wear black pants and an oversized white shirt. Cut a painter’s palette out from a piece of cardboard and paint a few different colored circles on it. Attach a paint brush to the palette. Splatter your shirt with paint, and to really add to the costume, draw a mustache and goatee on your face. To top it off, wear a beret and speak with a French accent!

Big Baby
Wear some pajamas (feetie pajamas would be perfect if you have a pair!) and carry around a “blankie.” Add a pacifier (suck on it or tie it around your neck) and a teddy bear.

Ghost
Dress in white or light gray clothes (old fashioned clothes work best if you have some). Use baby powder in your hair

Opposite Sex
Borrow clothes from a friend of the opposite sex. Men – stuff a bra with some socks and add some bright lipstick and crazy blush. Women – draw on a mustache and sideburns.

Beer Gut/Redneck
A plaid flannel shirt would work well for this costume. Stuff a pillow in your shirt for a beer gut and add some torn jeans with suspenders or overalls and a trucker hat.

Begger
This one should be pretty easy if you have some old clothes. Tear them and dirty them up a bit. Walk around with some change in a can and jingle it.

Night Sky
If you have some of those glow in the dark stars that kids put on their ceilings, you can attach them to some dark colored clothing and be the night sky. Just make sure to stand near a light to charge up the stars so they glow.
