Eco-Safe Cosmetic Tips
Fall is almost in full swing and Fall make-up colors are flying off the shelves. Mineral cosmetics have been a growing trend over the past few years, but simply buying mineral based make-up does not put you in the clear. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping for make-up.
You must read labels! Shopping for cosmetics should be treated like a trip to the grocery store, read the label and learn what’s in the product.
Chemicals to watch out for:
- Parabens–a preservative linked to breast cancer, weight gain and hormone disruption. Its prefixes are ethyl, methyl, butyl, isobutyl or propyl.
- Talc–contains a chemical that is similar to asbestos and can increase the risk of certain ovarian cancers.
- Fragrance–this term is used to mask hundreds of chemical ingredients including phthalates which disrupts the endocrine system and may cause reproductive and developmental harm.

Think outside the make-up package, your application tools matter too. Purchase organic cotton wash clothes and natural sponges that you can wash and reuse.
