If you’re like most modern living people, you love your gadgets. Whether it be a new cell phone, an MP3 player, or a great new laptop computer, we’re all surrounded by gadgets big and small that increasingly play an everyday part of our life.

But did you ever stop to think about the impact these gadgets have? The iPhone, for example, is made of raw materials that are mined from the ground (different types of metal). It’s then built and put together at massive factories that create pollution, waste, and other things bad for the environment. That really dampens the iPhone experience – what earth conscious individual wants to be a part of that?

Luckily, there are a few ways to lessen your impact when buying gadgets, and therefore offsetting any damage you may be causing:

  1. Recycle your gadgets – almost any gadget can now be recycled, from small cell phone all the way up to refrigerators and air conditioning units. The EPA website at http://www.epa.gov is a great resource for all things recycling.
  2. Wait a bit before upgrading – just because you can, doesn’t mean you have to. Maximize the use of of your current tools before deciding to buy a newer, “better” gadget. The earth will thank you for it.
  3. Buy Carbon Credits – while this is for the more die hard eco-lover, you can buy carbon credits to offset the excess carbon created by the factor. Most sites offer a guide or baseline so you know how many credits to buy.

All in all, gadgets are a great thing – just make sure to use them responsibly and keep mother earth in mind.
