Going Green Heating Cost Savers for 2011
There is no doubt that 2010 was a year for penny pinching, and chances are the same scenario may be applicable to 2011. There are lots of ways to save money though by “going green” with your heating. Here are few things that I am planning as my going green money saving resolution for 2011, in respect to heating costs.
Cutting back on electrical consumption
The winter months are always tough on the pocket book, especially when it comes to heating. It doesn’t matter what you heat with in many cases it takes some type of electricity, even if it is just enough to keep a pilot light going. By closing up all the drafts and weather proofing your home it will go a long way in cutting down some of the heating costs, both in fuel consumption and electricity. I personally like the candle test. I just walk around my home and watch the flicker of the flame to tell me that there may be a hidden draft somewhere.
Reducing the fuel costs
Aside from closing up the drafts, I have found making use of carpets to be of great benefit. It costs less to keep the floors warm, and it creates a psychological aura of warmth.
Dress for the weather
I am often doing battles with my kids about turning the heat up because they feel chilly. Yet when I look at their attire they are walking about our home with cut off t-shirts and shorts in the middle of winter. My argument is that simply putting on a fleece tracksuit is a whole lot cheaper than turning up the thermostat.
Heavy drapes are great money savers
It is worth a little extra money to purchase lined drapes for all season use. In the winter months they are great for pulling closed to help from heat escape. In the summer months simply closing them during the day helps to keep the summer heat at bay.
Heating alternatives
There are many more efficient heat sources becoming available. Rather than just consider what the best heating methods are, it’s worth checking out what is the cheapest for the area that you live in. There are now fuel efficient eco-friendly forms of heating. For someone else it may be pellet heating. Staying aware of the best heating alternatives can save a great deal of money, and may be worth the expense of switching over from your regular heating system.
Aside from looking at cost effective ways to heat your home, it is important to consider the environment. Be sure to look for eco-friendly ways to heat your home. If you don’t, it is going to cost you more money in the future. If we keep depleting our resources then heating costs are just going to continue to rise.
