Three Easy Ways to Lessen Your Thanksgiving Impact

While it may be a little late to change your travel plans or go searching for specific food items, there are still some steps you can take to lessen your impact this Thanksgiving.

No Plans

No plans for tomorrow? Consider spending your time helping others at a soup kitchen. It will give you something to do, you’ll feel good about how you’re spending your holiday, and the people you help will be thankful for what you’ve done for them – to you it may just be putting food on a plate, but to them, it could mean the world.

If you do have plans tomorrow, keep in mind that soup kitchens need help all year. Any time you want to volunteer at one, your help is sure to be welcomed.

Skip the Meat

I don’t mean skip your turkey tomorrow, if that’s what you have planned. One step many people taking towards lessening their impact year round is to eat less meat (e.g. Meatless Monday, etc.). If you’re like many and plan to have turkey tomorrow, consider making a meatless meal plan for the next few days (or weeks!) after Thanksgiving. This is, of course, after you finish your leftovers (no wasting!).

Do Good with Your Leftovers

If you live in an urban area or are near one, consider packing your leftovers into servings and handing them out to the homeless in your area. This is a wonderful way to give something to someone in need, and can give help in more ways than one – we need food to survive, but showing someone that you care and think about them, even if many people don’t, can make someone’s day that much brighter.

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Enjoy your friends and family (and food!).
